MARRAKECH

The ancient Imperial City of Marrakech fills a great palm fringed oasis where French-style boulevards lined with orange trees lead to magnificent gateways in the ochre and rose-pink ramparts. At its centre stands the towering Koutoubia mosque and nearby is the amazing open expanse of Djemâa el Fna.

Djemâa el Fna - often translated as the ‘Square of the Dead’ – is the single most amazing sight in Marrakech. Dead it is not, far from it, it has several lives throughout the day and should be seen morning, noon and night. The square begins the day as a lively and colourful fruit and vegetable market – with produce brought in by Berber farmers.

As the day progresses dancers, jugglers, fire-eaters, snake charmers, acrobats and storytellers all compete for an audience, each attracting a great circle of spectators. Expect to part with a few dirhams, especially if you want to take pictures. Scribes write letters for those who cannot, barbers cut hair, ‘dentists’ pull teeth!

At dusk it turns into a carnival of the weird and wonderful, providing an ever-changing entertainment. At the same time benches and tables are set out under bright lights and in front of banks of food - fruit, vegetables, various breads and meat on skewers. Meat is frizzled, sizzled, grilled and served hot, fresh, and very cheap. Most of us may find it difficult to tackle a sheep’s head alone or find any companions willing to help out!
Alternatively you can dine in a more familiar style while watching the mêlée below. Good places to eat include the Marrakchi, Dar Moha, the Yacout or Tobsil restaurants, each claiming to be ‘the best in town’. For good food at more modest prices go to El Fassia in the new town district of Guéliz, which is run entirely by women. After dinner why not enjoy a drink at the Café Argana and Café de France overlooking the square.

Those looking to escape the hustle and bustle should head for the stunning Majorelle Gardens owned by Yves Saint Laurent and the Saadian Pavilion, overlooking the city's reservoir.

Images and words alone cannot fully convey all of what Marrakech has to offer, it has to been seen, smelled and touched to be believed.

Riads
A True Moroccan Experience

Tucked away in the alleyways of the old medinas are the former family homes of wealthy merchants and traders. In recent years, many have been beautifully restored and furnished in traditional style, mostly using original materials and skilled local craftsmen. Once inside, riads reveal endless delights. Most open onto a central courtyard, with a fountain and a profusion of sweet smelling trailing plants. Above the courtyard there are galleries reached by steps off which are set the bedrooms, usually all different. There is often access to rooftop terraces with many offering amazing views.
