Island Info
The whole island is renowned for having fine beaches, with the east coast's 10km stretch at Belle Mare regarded as one of the best. Grand Baie offers excellent watersports and the beautiful beach at Le Morne stretches for 4km along the South West peninsula.

Activities
Scuba diving, boat trips and deep-sea fishing are all the rage in Mauritius. Explore the marine life with an undersea walk, strolling the ocean bed, wearing unique diving gear. Trekking and mountain biking offer great coastline views and golf is also popular. Séga dancing is the soul of Mauritius, with weekly performances in most of the hotels. The best place to experience the island’s nightlife is Grand Baie, which comes to life with open air cocktail bars, sunset cafés and nightclubs. Head to Port Louis’ waterfront for live music and sophisticated watering holes. Nightlife in the other resorts is mainly hotel-based, with casino nights and cultural shows.

Local dishes
Here, you can enjoy a dish of curried chickpeas or a nice Yorkshire pudding on the terrace of a French café, sipping imported wine or a thick malty ale while listening to Créole music and the conversation of locals in any number of lingoes.
Dholl, yellow split peas, feature heavily in Mauritian recipes, with specialities including dholl purri, wheat pancake stuffed with dholl and served with a tomato sauce and gâteaux piments; dholl and chillies deep-fried in batter. You’ll find samosas served at most roadside stalls. Chicken, beef and fish curry are very popular as well as seafood, particularly snapper. Try Phoenix beer and be blown away by Green Island rum.
