Barbados Holidays Barbados is the 'Little England' of the Caribbean, but not so much so that the locals have given up rotis for kidney pies, or rum for bitter ale. Bajans, as the islanders call themselves, are as West Indian as any of their Caribbean neighbours, and have tended to selectively borrow rather than assume English customs.
Barbados sits almost a hundred miles east of its closest neighbour, so when the Spaniards, Danes, French and others were busy fighting over the rest of the Caribbean, Barbados sat back with its Pimm's on ice, remaining solidly British.
Only 21 miles long by 14 miles wide, Barbados has a surprising diversity of scenery. Just a few miles take you from the tranquillity of the Caribbean west coast, with its luxury hotels and palm fringed beaches, to the dramatic cliffs and wild Atlantic rollers of the eastern coast. The interior has its own beauty as well. Green and lush, the spine of the island rises to more than 1,000 ft at Mount Hillaby while the rolling hills of the northern tip earned it the name Scotland District, from early settlers.
Beaches
Despite Barbados being just 21 miles long and 14 miles wide, this coral island has hundreds of soft white sandy beaches; Paynes Bay on the west and Crane Beach on the South are among the best in the Caribbean. Sports Barbados has plenty of action away from the beach, with hiking, golf, cycling and horseriding. Scuba diving and snorkelling are superb here, with colourful coral reefs and mysterious shipwrecks, while windsurfers flock to the Soup Bowl's bay at Bathsheba on the east coast. Local tastes Bajan food is delicious with seafood highly recommended. The national dish is flying fish served with cou-cou, made from cornmeal and okra. Try Roti, a folded pastry filled with spicy meat and potato, and hit your thirst with the locally produced Banks beer. Evening flavour St Lawrence, or ‘The Gap’, is lined with bars, restaurants and discos jumping with reggae beats. Head for the late night bars along 2nd Street in Holetown or the spectacular dinner shows for a real taste of Bajan culture. With fantastic deals to all of the hotels on the island we are positive we can find the right holiday experience at the right price for you. We use all of the major charter airlines as well as Virgin Atlantic and British Airways.
