A Trackers View of the Gorillas
They call it the ‘Magical Hour’. Sixty minutes of pure wildlife bliss. Three thousand six hundred seconds of jaw-dropping, adrenaline fuelled beauty! It’s hard to describe the time you spend with the mountain gorillas of Uganda. It’s not really until I got back to my lodge that I took stock and reflected on what I’d just done and seen.
To get so close to a wild animal is exhilarating and quite possibly the best wildlife experience of my life. Current figures have the number of gorillas in Uganda at just under 800. Fortunately the population is growing nicely thanks to the conservation efforts of the authorities and the local people of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. To see the gorillas could take a couple of hours trekking in the mountains, but it is such a beautiful place that time just slips by as you make you way up and down the forest in search of these majestic beasts. When you start your trek you are asked if you would like a porter. We would highly recommend this, it will cost you $20 but it’s the best spent $20 of your life. Also, you know that money is going directly to that porters family.
This video gives you a little insight in to the gorilla trekking experience in Uganda and is told by a Uganda Wildlife Authority official Gorilla Tracker – enjoy!
